This course explores the causes and consequences of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. It considers a variety of interpretations of the causes of collapse (nationalism, ideology, technology, international relations, economics, etc.), the evolving historiography on the subject, and the effects of the USSR's collapse on its successor states as well as global politics.
