Department: History
The Master’s Program in History provides advanced study with accomplished full-time faculty. We offer a range of courses, particularly in modern US, New York, modern European, Latin American, modern African, South Asian, military, gender, and Jewish history. Our degrees provide intellectual stimulation as well as hands-on training doing history. They serve as excellent preparation for doctoral study, the academic requirement for New York State teacher certification, archival or museum work, or jobs that demand high-level research skills.
The program offers several degrees. The MA in History can be completed either through coursework culminating in a Master’s thesis (the research track) or coursework plus comprehensive exams plus a capstone portfolio (the professional track). There is also a joint MLS/MA degree with the Graduate School of Information Sciences for students seeking careers in library or archival work. Undergraduate juniors with a high GPA may apply for the Accelerated MA, which allows qualifying students to take MA courses that count toward both their BA and MA degrees.
