Students examine how language develops in young children, the relation between language and cognition, and the sociocultural factors that impinge upon language learning. Among the major topics are: language assessment, language diversity, and emergent literacy. Emphasized throughout are teaching strategies and classroom experiences that foster language development in the young child.
