Description

This elective course examines various domains of surveillance in times of Insecurity. It introduces students to the core theories and issues related to security, surveillance and insecurity. Terror, crime, identity theft all generate fear in people. These feelings are not simply objective but are constructed by policy and media. They are sustained by fortifying urban areas through policing and the use of technology to surveillance people in cyberspace, prisons, and gated communities. This course examines the nature of surveillance and security in urban environments as it relates to technology, policing, architecture, place, gender among other categories of importance. Drawing from interdisciplinary texts, students will become familiar with geographers’, sociologists’ communications scholars, anthropologists’ and political scientists’ treatment of surveillance, security and insecurity.
