Physics of Music and Sound

This course is designed for liberal arts majors with an interest in understanding the principles behind the production of music and sound. Topics include origins and the nature of sound waves, hearing, harmonics, temperament, musical instruments, and other selected topics. Demonstrations are used extensively to illustrate pertinent concepts. This course emphasizes conceptual understanding rather than computation or problem solving. No knowledge of physics or music theory is required.
