Description
This course examines our society's efforts to address social-economic problems relating to poverty. After an historical overview of the development of welfare programs in this country, the course focuses on measures taken to combat poverty in the contemporary context. Issues such as the relation between welfare and work, out-of-wedlock childbearing, privatization, and immigrant access to public benefits are addressed. While the course primarily emphasizes basic income maintenance, it also provides a survey social welfare policies and programs that comprise our current social safety net.
