The course considers the development of liberalism and a new national identity in Spanish literature from the Age of Enlightenment through the post-colonial period. It will cover eighteenth-century essayists, the most important figures of Spanish romanticism (M. J. de Larra, J. Espronceda), and major exponents of realist fiction, in particular Benito Pérez Galdós and Leopoldo Alas, "ClarÃn."
