Overview of digital libraries; the historical reasons for their development; the nature of their creation, uses and evaluation. Methods of collection building, knowledge organization, interface design and information retrieval techniques appropriate to multimedia digital materials are covered. Emphasis is also given to social, economic and legal aspects of digital libraries, in particular as they relate to the traditional library.
